Bodybuilding vs athletic training

Bodybuilding trains muscle for size, using volume taken close to failure. Athletic training trains muscle for force and speed, using heavy loads, sprints and jumps. Both build muscle. Only the second reliably trains the fast-twitch fiber that makes a body look athletic rather than simply large, and the two are not mutually exclusive.

Almost every man who trains has picked one of these without ever deciding to. Here is what each one is actually for.

What is bodybuilding training?

Bodybuilding is training organized around muscle size. The unit of thought is the muscle, not the movement: chest today, back tomorrow, and each one hit from several angles for enough hard sets to force it to grow.

The method works, and it is better understood than anything else in the gym. Moderate loads, controlled tempo, sets taken near failure, plenty of them. If your goal is a bigger set of shoulders, this is the shortest route to a bigger set of shoulders and nobody serious argues otherwise.

What it does not do is ask you to produce force quickly. Controlled tempo is the opposite instruction. So a man can spend ten years under a bar, add real muscle, and never once tell his nervous system to fire everything at once.

What is athletic training?

Athletic training is organized around what the body can do. The unit of thought is the movement: sprint, jump, throw, press, pull, and the muscle is whatever gets recruited to make that happen.

It leans on two things bodybuilding mostly skips. Heavy loads, where the bar moves slowly because it is genuinely heavy. And speed, where the load is light and the whole point is how fast you move it.

Sessions are shorter and look emptier. Six to ten quality efforts with long rests between them is a real session, because the fiber doing the work runs out fast and nothing useful happens once it has.

Do they build the same muscle?

Not quite, and this is the part that decides everything else.

Muscle is built from two broad fiber types. Slow-twitch handles low-force work for a long time. Fast-twitch, type II, produces far more force and quits quickly. Fast-twitch is where most of the growth potential sits, and it is also the fiber that shapes the parts of a body people read as athletic.

Bodybuilding recruits type II, but mostly at the end of a hard set, once the slow fibers have run out and cannot cover the load. Athletic training recruits it from the first rep, because the force or the speed demanded leaves no alternative. The same fiber, reached by two very different routes, at very different frequencies.

The reason it matters after 30 is that type II is the fiber that goes first. In a 2013 study in Experimental Gerontology, type II fibers were 29% smaller in men averaging 71 than in men averaging 23, while type I fibers showed no significant difference. Training that only glances at type II is training that only glances at the thing you are losing.

Which one makes you look athletic?

Athletic training, and it is not close, but the reason is worth understanding because it is not about calories.

The look people mean by athletic is a distribution, not a size. Shoulders and glutes and hamstrings carrying visible muscle, a waist that has not kept pace, and enough tension in how the person stands that they look ready to move. Those are the areas fast-twitch training loads hardest, because they are the areas that produce force when you sprint or jump.

Bodybuilding can build that shape too. It just does not aim at it. Aim at every muscle equally and you get a body that reads as big rather than fast, which is the correct outcome for the sport it comes from and the wrong one for most men who are not competing in it.

Can you do both?

Yes, and it is the better answer for almost everybody. The two are not in conflict. They are in an order.

Explosive work first, on fresh legs, while you can still produce real force. Heavy compounds next. The bodybuilding-style volume that builds shape goes last, when being tired costs you nothing.

Run it the other way and the athletic half quietly stops working, because a sprint on tired legs is not a sprint. Most men who believe they have tried both have actually done this: bolted a few sprints onto the end of leg day, found it did nothing, and concluded the sprints were the problem.

Which should you choose?

If you are chasing a specific muscle that is behind, and you are happy with how you move, bodybuilding is the right tool and you should use it.

If you train regularly and still do not look or move like someone who trains, the missing variable is almost certainly the fast half, and adding more volume will not find it.

Most men over 30 are in the second group and think they are in the first.

Is bodybuilding bad for you?

No. It is an effective way to build muscle and it is better researched than most of what happens in a gym. The criticism here is narrower than that: it is a poor way to train force and speed, and force and speed are what decline first with age.

Will athletic training make me smaller?

It should not. Fast-twitch fiber is where most of the growth potential lives, so training it is a growth stimulus in its own right. What changes is the distribution: more through the posterior chain and shoulders, less isolated arm and chest volume, unless you keep that work in.

Can I sprint and lift in the same week without overdoing it?

Yes, if the hard days are separated and the sprint work comes before the fatigue rather than after it. Two or three high-force exposures a week is the usual ceiling, counting heavy lifting and sprinting together rather than separately.

I only have a gym, no field. Can I still train athletically?

Mostly. Heavy compounds, jumps, and a sled or a bike for the speed work cover a lot of it. What a gym cannot easily replace is full-speed running, which is why the program treats a hill or a field as worth the trip.

Which one burns more fat?

Neither, in the sense people mean. What you eat decides that. The relevant difference is what each protects while it happens, and force-based training gives the body a strong reason to keep the muscle you already have.

Type II fibers were 29% smaller in the older group; the difference in type I fibers was not statistically significant. The same older men then trained for six months, after which their type II fiber size had increased by 24%.
