What hybrid training actually is
Hybrid training means developing strength and endurance in the same training block rather than choosing one. It works, with a caveat: high volumes of long, slow endurance work blunt strength and power gains, an effect called interference. Keep the conditioning short and hard rather than long and slow and most of that conflict goes away.
The word has been doing a lot of work on the internet lately, mostly without a definition attached. Here is one.
What is hybrid training?
Training that develops more than one quality at once, on purpose, instead of specializing. In practice it usually means strength and endurance in the same week, and often strength, endurance and power together.
The contrast is with how most people actually train, which is one thing at a time without ever deciding to. A lifter lifts. A runner runs. Each spends years getting better at one quality and quietly worse at the other.
Hybrid is a training structure, not a sport and not a piece of equipment. Any program that asks you to lift heavy on Monday and run hard on Thursday is a hybrid program, whether or not it calls itself one.
Where did the term come from?
From the observation that a small number of people are genuinely good at both, and that this used to be considered impossible.
For most of the last forty years the received wisdom was that strength and endurance actively cancel each other out, so serious athletes should pick a lane. The idea has softened considerably, partly because of better research and partly because a visible group of people kept doing both anyway.
What the term has picked up on the way is a lot of marketing. Worth separating the structure, which is sound, from the aesthetic, which is just an aesthetic.
Do strength and endurance actually fight each other?
Partly, and the details matter more than the headline.
The phenomenon has a name, the interference effect, and it is real: adding a lot of endurance work to a strength program measurably reduces the strength and especially the power you would otherwise have gained. It does not run in both directions equally. Lifting rarely hurts endurance much. Endurance can meaningfully hurt lifting.
The size of it depends on how much endurance work, how long each session is, and what kind. Large volumes of long, slow, repetitive work interfere most. Short, hard efforts interfere least, and some of them are barely distinguishable from the strength work in what they demand.
The research literature here is broad and not all of it is open to read, so this page describes the direction of the effect rather than putting a number on it. The practical consequence is what matters anyway, and it is not subtle.
What does that mean in practice?

Short and hard beats long and slow
Sprints and hill efforts sit on the same side of the ledger as heavy lifting: high force, short duration. An hour of steady running does not. If your conditioning has to compete with your strength work, make it the kind that does not.

Separate the hard days
Interference is worst when both qualities are trained in a fatigued state, back to back. Hard days apart, or at minimum the high-force work first while you can still produce force.

Count total hard days, not sessions
Heavy lifting and sprinting draw on the same recovery. Two or three genuinely hard exposures across the week is a ceiling for most people, and the two categories share it rather than each getting their own.

Order within a session is not negotiable
Explosive first, heavy second, everything else after. A sprint on tired legs is a slow run, and a slow run is a different adaptation.
Is hybrid training worth it if you just want to look good?
Yes, and for a reason that has nothing to do with calories burned.
The look people describe as athletic comes disproportionately from fast-twitch fiber, and fast-twitch is trained by force and speed rather than by duration. A structure that keeps hard, fast work in the week is a structure that keeps training that fiber.
It is also the fiber you are otherwise losing. In a 2013 study in Experimental Gerontology, type II fibers were 29% smaller in men averaging 71 than in men averaging 23, while type I fibers showed no significant difference. Specializing in slow work means specializing in the half that was not going anywhere.
Who should not train this way?
Anyone with a genuine specialist goal in the next few months. If you are trying to run a fast marathon in April, this is not the block for it, and the same is true if you are peaking for a powerlifting meet.
Everyone else, which is almost everyone, is not specializing in anything. They are just training one quality by default and calling it a preference.

Is hybrid training the same as CrossFit?
No. Hybrid describes a goal, developing more than one quality at once. CrossFit is one specific approach to it with its own competitive format. Plenty of hybrid programs look nothing like it.
Will running ruin my gains?
Not at sane volumes, and not if it is the right kind. The interference effect scales with how much long, slow work you do. A couple of short, hard efforts a week sit on the same side of the ledger as your lifting rather than against it.
Should I lift or run first?
Whichever quality you care most about, on legs that are fresh. If explosiveness and strength are the priority, they go first, and the conditioning goes after or on another day entirely.
How many days a week does hybrid training take?
Three to six, depending on what you are willing to give it. The number that matters more is how many of those days are genuinely hard, which for most people tops out at two or three whatever the total.
Can beginners train this way?
Yes, and it is arguably the better place to start, because building both from the beginning avoids spending three years getting good at one and having to backfill the other. The intensity should be earned over weeks either way.

Type II fibers were 29% smaller in the older group; the difference in type I fibers was not statistically significant.
